[MPlayer-users] first time... lots of errors

I've just installed mplayer on a linux box but am having trouble
playing a movie. I don't expect some to fix this for me, but I'm just
looking for some pointers as to what I need to do to sort this out.
It seems to me that there are a few different errors here:
1) It's looking in /usr/local/etc/mplayer for various configuration
files, but there aren't any there. Do I need these files?
2) [VO_SUB_VIDIX] Couldn't find working VIDIX driver.
Details of my installed hardware are:
05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60
[Radeon X300 (PCIE)] (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 0f02
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
Memory at d8000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=128M]
I/O ports at 6c00 [size=256]
Memory at fd7f0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fd700000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
05:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 [Radeon X300SE]
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 0f03
Flags: fast devsel
Memory at fd7e0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled]
[size=64K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
So, what do I need to do to get it to recognize this?
I have the file /usr/local/lib/mplayer/vidix/radeon_vid.so... is that
not the driver?
3) ERROR: Could not open required DirectShow codec wmv8ds32.ax.
You need to upgrade/install the binary codecs package.
I'm only really interested in playing WMV9 files and I deduced that I
would need the W32 codecs so I downloaded the W32 codecs (essential)
and placed them into /usr/local/lib/codecs
And after all those errors, I get an output like:
*** [vo] Allocating mp_image_t, 320x240x12bpp YUV planar, 115200 bytes
A: 8.9 V: 8.8 A-V: 0.068 ct: 0.375 91/ 91 3% 0% 0.3% 0 0
which looks like it is actually playing the file!
Here is the full output from mplayer... maybe this will help:
