Yes, otherwise a 32-bit MPlayer will be trying to reference 64-bit  
libraries, which, as I understand it, doesn't work.

Well, you'd think that, except that missing libraries can be  
overridden with --enable flags in the configure line, and there *CAN*  
be bugs in the configure script. Also, we're not talking about  
*missing* libraries. We're talking about the libraries being 64-bit  
instead of 32-bit. The configure script may not know how to check for  
those kinds of things.
