vesa and svga (and aa/caca for text) should work fine on practically any
videocard, though it will be much slower, and likely result in tearing. 
Still, perhaps that will be acceptable for you.

Alternatively, you may be able to use Linux's framebuffer support, and
have mplayer output through that.

Not knowing what videocard VMware uses, I can't say.  However,
installing X11 is pretty much a guaranteed method to work.
