It's not the codec, but the swf container itself that is the problem:

[swf @ 0x87a8584]Compressed SWF format not supported
LAVF_header: av_open_input_stream() failed

Just try playing a few of the videos on youtube.com .  You'll
occasionally find one that works, but rarely.

Of course, having a lowsy codec, compared to other popular formats, is
an annoyance as well.  Hopefully the next version, with VP6 support
will improve the situation.
