I use a little Windows program called DVDate - it provides information about
AVI files, specifically DV AVI files, and does some other things.

Seeing that mplayer can't read that format, I doubt that mencoder could - I
haven't even tried. I use DVDate for conversion too.

If you're using a different operating system, look around for a similar
utility or ask the author Paul Glagla at paul.glagla at free.fr or
http://paul.glagla.free.fr/index_en.htm if he has any suggestions.
