'-vfm ffmpeg' tells mplayer to choose a video decoder from the ffmpeg
family. The default would be libmpeg2, otherwise. Check the man page and
'mplayer -vfm help'.

Anyway, libmpeg2 and ffmpeg's mpeg2 decoder output very slightly
different data and probably behave quite a bit different when handling
corrupt input. Something is apparently causing the software scaling code
to have trouble, and it only get triggered with the right combination.

Too bad. It was worth a try.

Anyway, since none of us can reproduce the problem I don't think it's
likely to be fixed.

Although I don't think this is the case, you might as well check your
CPU for adequate cooling (try the cpuburn program :) and run memtest86+
on your RAM.
