Can you please try out the attached patch? It seems to work right for
me on Linux, but I can't test on mingw. If you report success, I'll
submit my patch for inclusion and hopefully apply it or a revision to
CVS.

Something like:
cd /usr/local/src/mplayer/main/libavcodec
patch -p0 < ~/av_tempfile.diff
