try running mplayer with -v option and copy that output?
if this does not work did you try using ffmpeg to do this before? (maybe
there's some upstream update in that which is not yet in mplayer? -- also
I sometimes manage to use VLC to stream to a file when mplayer crashes
which probably has to do with the fact that vlc uses upstream ffmpeg)
