I haven't tried in the last 5 months or so, but more than once I have
preferred the results of xvid over x264 at the same bitrate.

I think it's just a matter of time before x264 exceeds xvid in quality
in all cases (maybe it's there now), but I've been quite happy with xvid
in terms of its quality for my DVD rips.
