Problem solved, so I'll explain for the archives.

nForce S/PDIF is working well.
The problem was caused by
1) I had my amp set up incorrectly
2) mplayer was throwing me a red herring by telling me it was playing
2-channel when in fact hwac3 was sending the full raw audio to the amp.

I've quoted the output again below. Why was mplayer telling me that
it was only playing 2 channels? Unfortunately it caused much waste of
time by missing the real problem. Is this something that could be fixed
without too much difficulty?

> $ mplayer  -ac hwac3 -vo null sample,dvd,ac3-5.1.avi
> Forced audio codec: hwac3
> Opening audio decoder: [hwac3] AC3/DTS pass-through S/PDIF
> No accelerated IMDCT transform found
> hwac3: switched to AC3, 448000 bps, 48000 Hz
> AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, ac3, 448.0 kbit/29.17% (ratio: 56000->192000)

cheers, Mike.
