Uh, great ! Thanks so much, I would have never found this on my own; it
is kind of hidden and it took me some time to understand.
Finally -vf dsize=-2:460 does what I wanted; with respect to height and
aspect: constant height of 460; original aspect ratio.
The horizontal position now behaves slightly 'funny': the left upper
corner at -geometry 30%:70% isn't at 30% any more; neither is the
center. The center of the video now moves around horizontally, depending
on the aspect, but only slightly and I can live with that.

Now another question: having achieved the videos playing with
$ mplayer myfile.mpg in a constant height and unaltered aspect, I was
thinking of setting up the play-list with gmplayer; having read that it
uses the same file: ~/.mplayer/config. Somehow, it doesn't seem to
respect this configuration, though, and does rather what it feels like.
I have tried both 'save window position' on and off; but neither follows
the rules set out and respected so well on the command line.
Any hint on the latter ?

Thanks again,

Uwe
