I symlinked the /usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.* to /usr/lib and the 
compile completed properly.

As to why, that's where the slackware maintainer puts them and I 
*assume* he knows more than I about it :-)

# grep libfontconfig /var/log/packages/*
/var/log/packages/fontconfig-2.4.1-i486-1:usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.a
/var/log/packages/fontconfig-2.4.1-i486-1:usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.so.1.1.0
/var/log/packages/fontconfig-2.4.1-i486-1:usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.la

libfreetype is initially installed in /usr/lib and I had to symlink 
those to /usr/X11R6/lib to get the compile correct.  Appears to be a mess.
