So it probably is XVideo that causes this. You are not by chance using
some binary drivers? Especially ATI ones (though nVidia has/had? this as
well esp. when switching from and to fullscreen mode).
Either upgrade them, switch to the free ones, or use -vo gl (and check
the man page, you should probably use some suboptions like -vo
gl:yuv=2).
