I'm not sure if this is a part of your question, but I think you have to 
specify the type of image file when encoding, using a type=tiff sort of 
thing, in addition to the mf:// part..  I don't know if this is 
required, but I've been using it for some very large jpeg animations I'm 
working on and haven't had problems (on linux).  I haven't tried 
anything with tif files though.
