For one, it has specialized hardware especially for this task, so  
it's likely it can do the same task far more efficiently than MPlayer  
(Not necessarily better). It may have better quality outputs than  
your video card (however, given that we're talking about DVI-Out,  
it's sort of a moot point). Oh, and menus. MPlayer's menu support is  
still experimental. Other than that, I'll let the people who know  
what they're talking about speak.
