when I said "a back buffer", what I should have said was "all of the
video memory that DRI allocates".  removing the DRI module results in
1280 * 2252 * 2 of memory left avaible to xv when in 16bpp.  (DRI was
failing to load in 24bpp because there was not enough remaining video
memory to satisfy it)  now mplayer plays fine with xv without having to
scale the video down. :)
