I'm on Mac OS X and I use quartz.
I've tried gl but I ge this error:

[gl] using extended formats. Use -vo gl:nomanyfmts if playback fails.
vo: couldn't open the X11 display ()!
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

Using -vo gl:nomanyfmts also gives the same error minus the [gl] line.
