[MPlayer-users] mencoder ignores xvid bitrate setting

 Hello everybody.

My name is Rudolf, this is my first post here.

I am trying to encode a dvd which I dumped using mplayer to an xvid avi the size of 2 CDs (1400 MBs). Using the equation from the mplayer documents I worked out I could encode this at a bitrate of 1800 to achieve this.

My problem is that mencoder seems to be ignoring my desired bitrate.

My first pass looks like so:

 mencoder input.vob -o /dev/null -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1800:chroma_opt:vhq=4:bvhq=1:noqpel:quant_type=mpeg:pass=1 -mc 0 -vf pullup,softskip,scale=608:464 -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=4:q=5:aq=0:vol=9:mode=0

 And second pass like so:

 mencoder input.vob -o output.avi -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=1800:chroma_opt:vhq=4:bvhq=1:noqpel:quant_type=mpeg:pass=2 -mc 0 -vf pullup,softskip,scale=608:464 -oac mp3lame -lameopts vbr=4:q=5:aq=0:vol=9:mode=0

I have also tried bitrate=-1433600, which I understand should tell it to attempt to automatically choose the ideal bitrate for the size.

I get the same result, a file that is about 1.2 GB and with a bitrate (mplayer -identify) of 1554344.

Anyone run into anything similar before?

 -Rudolf.
