You're going to have a hard time playing 1080 h.264 video with a
3GHz P4.  Look through the -lavdopts options in the man page, to try
and reduce CPU load.

You can also add -framedrop, if it's just occasionally too
CPU-intensive (otherwise, you'll just get a slideshow).

Other than that, you could reencode to a less CPU intensive format, at a
rather high bitrate, and play that in realtime instead.
