Hi.

While trying to figure out the sound and video formats in "Conquest of the new world" ( Interplay/Qicksilver ), I also used:
1.) MPlayer
2.) FFMPEG/FFPLAY Win32 release (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/ffmpeg , http://arrozcru.no-ip.org/ffmpeg_builds/ , http://arrozcru.no-ip.org/ffmpeg_builds/bin/ffmpeg-r9017-win32.tar.bz2)
3.) mve2avi ( http://return0.pisem.net/files/mve2avi24h.zip )
4.) YASA 3GP Video Converter ( http://www.yasasoft.com/3gpvideoconverter/setup_yasa3gpconverter.exe )

Here are the results, bugs and further questions:

-- Contents: --
Interplay .MVE
1.) Mplayer
1.a) Mplayer - IPLOGO.MVE -- does not currently work
1.b) Mplayer - INTROENG.MVE -- does not currently work
2.) FFPLAY
2.a) FFPLAY - IPLOGO.MVE -- plays without problems
2.b) FFPLAY - INTROENG.MVE -- plays without problems
3) mve2avi
3.a) mve2avi - IPLOGO.MVE -- plays without problems too
3.b) mve2avi - INTROENG.MVE -- plays without problems too
4.) YASA 3GP Video Converter -- plays IPLOGO.MVE and INTROENG.MVE without any problems
5.)Interplay .SCP - a new Interplay xxxPCM audio format?
6.)Questions

Definitions:
a) CNW = Conquest of the new world
b) The described example .mve video files can be downloaded here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N20L6KHW
c) The example .scp audio files can be obtained from the CNW demo (See below.) or here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=0DCCHNA4
---------------

1.)
MPLAYER is not able to decently play any .mve file from the "Conquest of the new world" (CNW) videos:

You can see that MPLAYER is not able to correctly detect the video.

In the second case (playing INTROENG.MVE), MPLAYER is also not able to detect the correct sound format.
MPLAYER uses PCM, but INTROENG.MVE uses interplay_dpcm.
-->The result sounds not really good.

2.)
FFPLAY has no problems to play Interplay .mve videos
ffplay.exe H:\CDDATA\IPLOGO.MVE
ffplay.exe H:\CDDATA\INTROENG.MVE

...works fine, but no output/ no details about the played .mve file will be produced/displayed.

3.)

C:\[...]\mve2avi24h>fsp.exe -nosave H:\CDDATA\INTROENG.MVE
...works fine too, but no output/ no details about the played .mve file will be produced/displayed.

The -nosave switch is important for just playing the .mve movie without converting to .avi.

4.)
The YASA 3GP Video Converter can play IPLOGO.MVE and INTROENG.MVE.
Furthermore it displays different, interesting details about the audio/video streams inside the .mve files:

Summary:
  File: H:\CDDATA\IPLOGO.MVE
  Format: ipmovie/Interplay MVE format
  Duration: 00:02:07.3
  Bitrate: 352 kb/s

Video:
  Codec: interplayvideo
  Size: 432x320

  Codec: pcm_u8
  Sample Rate:22050 Hz
  Channel: stereo
  Bitrate: 352 kb/s
----------------------
Summary:
  File: H:\CDDATA\INTROENG.MVE
  Format: ipmovie/Interplay MVE format
  Duration: 00:04:59.5
  Bitrate: 352 kb/s

Video:
  Codec: interplayvideo
  Size: 480x272
  Frame Rate: 9.99 fps

Audio:
  Codec: interplay_dpcm
  Sample Rate:22050 Hz
  Channel: stereo
  Bitrate: 352 kb/s

As you can see:
Currently, only one commercial product is available to play a .mve file and display enhanced .mve file information at the same time.

PS: The commercial products:
+ "ImTOO PSP VideoConverter"
+ "Xilisoft PSP Video Converter"
+ "YASA 3GP Video Converter" seem to use all the same libraries for exotic audio/video formats (such as: Interplay, ...etc.).

5.)Interplay .SCP
5.1)Introduction:
The Conquest of the World CD has following file/directory structure:
H:.
| CNW.CD
| CONQUEST.INS
| INSTALL.EXE
|
+---CDDATA
| CNWSNDC.WAD
| INTROENG.MVE

| INTROGER.MVE
| IPLOGO.MVE
|
+---D2DEMO
        D2_1.SOW
        D2_2.SOW
        D2_3.SOW
        INSTALL.EXE

"ConQUEST.INS" is an ARJ-archive which contains the main part of the "Conquest of the New World" game data.
The data will be unpacked while installing the game.

After the installation, following files are in the "Conquest of the New World" game directory:
CNW.WAD
CNWMAIN.EXE
CNWSNDH.WAD
CONQUEST.BAT
CONQUEST.CFG
DOS4GW.EXE
E2.DBG
E2TUT.DAT
HMIDET.386
HMIDRV.386
NLFDXFIR.CVS
README.FRE
README.GER
README.TXT
SETUP.EXE
TESTDIGI.RAW

All the .WAD files (on CNW CD / inside CNW directory) are non-compressed container files, which can be opened with XUCR:
--> http://xccu.sourceforge.net/
--> Top Navigation
--> http://xhp.xwis.net/utilities/XUCR.zip

The file CNWSNDC.WAD (on the CNW CD) contains all music tunes, which are played in "CNW":
BAGPIPE.SCP
BATTLE.SCP
COUNTRY.SCP
END.SCP
INDIAN.SCP
MENU.SCP
WINDGUST.SCP
WINDMT.SCP
WINDONLY.SCP
WINDWS.SCP

Opening the .scp files in a HEX editor, you can "see" that the files consist of waveform data.
Opening the .scp files in a WAV editor, while trying different settings/setting combinations (PCM, 22050/44100KHz, 8/16/16bit, signed/unsigned, ...), you will hear the music, but very noisy.
This is an evidence that no common/general/normal PCM is used, but a certain other kind of PCM (maybe Interplay's DPCM ? -> which normally will only be used in MVE videos).

So, I tried to play the extracted Interplay .scp tunes with mplayer and the other mentioned players.
But no success.
Currently, it seems to be that FFMPEG/FFPLAY/MPLAYER cannot be forced to play .scp files as DPCM.

If you want to try out/follow/reproduce the described Interplay .scp stuff (.scp music tunes inside "CNW" .wad files), then you do not need to buy "CNW".
You can download the demo here:
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/details.aspx?view=buy&itemid=1393349#productSpecs
--> Download Free Version --> cnwdemo.zip / cnwdemoa.zip

Hints:
If you extract a .scp music tune from DEMOSNDS.WAD (CNW demo) into the CNW demo directoy and rename it to "Country.SCP", then the CNW demo will play the .scp tune on title screen instead playing the default .scp tune from the DEMOSNDS.WAD container file.
If you extract a .scp music tune from CNWSNDC.WAD (CNW retail/ full version) into the CNW directoy and rename it to "MENU.SCP", then CNW will play the .scp tune on title screen instead playing the default .scp tune from the CNWSNDC.WAD container file.

Now, here are the questions:
1)
In different MPlayer documentations you can read that Interplay .mve movies are supported by Mplayer.
Why is Mplayer not able to decently play .mve files, although MPlayer uses FFMPEG/FFPLAY related libraries/sources/stuff ?

In other words:
FFMPEG/FFPLAY libraries/sources/stuff can play .mve files and Mplayer uses FFMPEG/FFPLAY related libraries/sources/stuff ,
but MPlayer has troubles to play .mve files - why?

2.)
How to drive/force FFPLAY or FFMPEG that they play a .scp file as a DPCM file?
I already spent hours to study the FFMPEG console commands and I also tried different console commands.
But until now, I could not reach to force FFPLAY/FFMPEG to handle the .scp files as DPCM data.

3.)
Without any problems, FFMPEG can extract the audio stream from an .mve file (with these audio stream properties: pcm_u8, 22050 Hz, stereo) 1:1 to a wav file with the same properties:

----------
C:\[...]\ffmpeg-r9017-win32\bin>ffmpeg -i H:\CDDATA\IPLOGO.MVE -acodec copy c:\iplogo.wav

Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 90000.00 (900
00/1) -> 10.00 (10/1)
Input #0, ipmovie, from 'H:\CDDATA\IPLOGO.MVE':
  Duration: 00:02:07.3, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 352 kb/s
  Stream #0.0: Video: interplayvideo, pal8, 432x320, 10.00 fps(r)
  Stream #0.1: Audio: pcm_u8, 22050 Hz, stereo, 352 kb/s
Output #0, wav, to 'c:\iplogo.wav':
  Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_u8, 22050 Hz, stereo, 352 kb/s
Stream mapping:
  Stream #0.1 -> #0.0
Press [q] to stop encoding
size=    1658kB time=38.5 bitrate= 352.8kbits/s
video:0kB audio:1658kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead 0.002592%
----------

Now, how can FFMPEG/FFPLAY extract the raw audio stream from an .mve file (that uses DPCM audio compression inside its audio stream) to a .raw/.bin file that only contains the dpcm audio stream (without any .wav header)?

"ffmpeg -f ipmovie -i h:\CDDATA\INTROENG.MVE -acodec copy -f raw c:\introeng.raw"
...does not work.

4.)
When will MPLAYER be able to decently play .mve files (again)?

5.)
Will .mve support / .scp support be added to the ffdshow package?

It would be very great, if all described points/problems/questions could be solved.

Thank you.
