I didn't compare the file with the QuickTime spec, but VLC plays the 
correct size, acting as if it had found something in the data set about 
the 640x480 that MPlayer didn't find and acts on it. When told to use 
-demuxer lavf, MPlayer handles the size correctly.  I agree that someone 
with more knowledge about the Quicktime/MOV spec should investigate this 
more closely.
