Hi! -- here is where I am after fresh retry.
Thank you so much !, and thank you also HG for the pointers --- it is all helping move me forward!
That 'make_output.txt 2>&1' command failed, it returned:
sh: make_output.txt: command not found
:-(
However, this is where things stand with the adjustments you recommend,
----------------------------------------------------------
After running
$ ./configure --enable-runtime-cpudetection --codecsdir=codecs
I get back,
Detected operating system: MINGW32
Detected host architecture: i386
Checking for cc version ... not found
Checking for gcc version ... 3.2.3, ok
Checking for host cc ... gcc
Checking for cross compilation ... no
Checking for GCC & CPU optimization abilities ... i486

2.13.90) ... failed (Upgrade binutils to 2.16.92 or use --disable-ssse3
etc.)
Error: obsolete binutils version
-----------------------------------------------------------
thats where it bombs out. I have one other switch, which I omitted for
the above compile test..... which didn't work at all. It was taken
from that old help file I used,
That is,
$ ./configure --enable-runtime-cpudetection --codecsdir=codecs --with-livelibdir=/home/Owner/live
The switch --with-livelibdir=/home/Owner/live, returns back "Unknown parameter: --livelibdir=/home/Owner/live"
I tried tweaking it to just --livelibdir=/home/Owner/live
, but no go.

:) Have a very nice day.
Best wishes, Sara

They may be outdated in the sense that they are not necessarily the
most recent versions, but they should still work. Sometimes, the
configure output will tell you the minimum version number
required.

You no longer need to download ffmpeg separately. The required
portions are automatically downloaded with MPlayer, so you can
skip the step where it says check out ffmpeg and move libavXXXX ...

They are separate libraries. They are not included in the svn checkout.
Actually, there are even more libraries that MPlayer can use if they are
present, but these provide the most commonly used features.

Are you sure that that was the command? The --with-codecsdir option has been
changed to --codecsdir. You would have got a message saying
'unknown parameter: --with-codecsdir=codecs.
Also, you can omit --enable-runtime-cpudetection if you do not plan
to run MPlayer
on a computer other than the one on which it was built. If you do,
MPlayer will be
optimised for your PC, but it might not run on another.

Are you sure that they were tons of errors, and not just tons of warnings?
MPlayer compilation generates a lot of warnings, but you don't have to
worry about them.
Unfortunately, you have not posted the errors. You can save the output
like this:
make> make_output.txt 2>&2
Please post make_output.txt.
