[MPlayer-users] why my mplayer hangs?

Hi,
I'm using mplayer v. 1.0-rc1svn20070225-0.3etch1 under a Debian Etch o s.
i'm using only the console mode.
On another (older) pc with Debian Sarge and an older version of the mplayer, I'm
able to play some wmv or other videos from within my text-mode console.
On my (recent) Etch pc the hole Gnu/Linux system hangs when I do that:
man someone tell me how to begin with following the process so that I should
be able to tell about any error message it is supposed to produce?
There are no any yet since it totally hangs.
There is a major difference between my Sarge and my Etch pc: the older one
(Sarge) has an ATI card,
while my Etch pc has its own Intel video chipset.
Any trial/test ideas welcome!
