Probably the reason is that he thinks you used in your quote:

> "or we're not going to listen to you"

on purpose which is much, much more extreme than the MPlayer output:
> "- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.\n"\
> " Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and\n"\
> " disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.\n"

Or the IMO more common (of course not an exact quote either):
> "we can't help you unless you give us a gdb backtrace"

But this reminds me: there is the -crash-debug option which _might_
simplify the process of getting a backtrace, at least if/when I find a
way to make it automatically execute the "bt" command. Though that
feature is not much tested, and it won't help you get around compiling
with --enable-debug...

What is a user? For an MPlayer user to profit from the list would need
to be able to use the command line and must be ready to invest some time
and learn some new things. An ffmpeg user on ffmpeg-user quite often
would be expected to know C.
But if you care: what annoys me about some of your mails is that they
seem to shout "I don't want to do any work, you should fix it for me!".
Everyone with some experience in email communications knows that first
impressions from emails are unlikely to be right, but probably few can
avoid reacting according to those impressions :-).

Greetings,
