IIRC it uses a default palette, though that is irrelevant since your
real question is something else ;-)

No, but it embeds the .idx file which can contain the palette that
specifies the colours.
E.g.:
> palette: 000000, cbcbcb, 000000, 000000, 000000, cbcbcb, 000000, 000000, 000000, cbcbcb, 000000, 000000, 000000, cbcbcb, 000000, 000000
