This is news to me, but not terribly surprising. I don't know if it
would be possible to arrange for audio-only edit lists, but the odds of
anyone implementing it soon probably aren't terribly high.

I suspect that MPlayer cannot do what you are wanting to. The best thing
I could suggest would be to script up something involving -ao pcm and
e.g. sox, but I've never done much in that direction so I can't provide
any specifics; it would be rather clunky in any case.

(Actually, if you don't mind outputting to a different format, 'mplayer
d1.mp3 -ss 30 -endpos 35 -ao pcm:fast:file=d1-1.wav' and variants
thereon might be able to get the job done... but that doesn't seem like
a particularly clean solution either, it just has the advantage of being
possibly able to be done with existing tools.)
