- -alang needs an IFO file for the language mapping.

you need to use -aid for the playing without IFOs. Simply use the number
specified behind the playing on normal DVD:

audio stream: 0 format: ac3 (5.1) language: en aid: 128.
audio stream: 1 format: ac3 (5.1) language: fr aid: 129.

for DVD, you can use -alang en, for the dumped stream, use -aid 128.

It's as simple as that.

In any case, I'm I the only one who has problems with subtitles at the
current stage?
I usually play them with -slang en -forcedsubsonly, which brings them
only up when some other language is spoken, and Shift+f brings up
subtitles all at once. But as of late, I need to cycle through all the
subtitles with 'j' to get them to appear. Same is valid for dvdnav as
for dvd, with dvdnav subtitles (once they're on) disappearing after
every chapter break :(
