[MPlayer-users] corruption when encoding with subtitles

hi,

i am having some transient trouble when encoding with subtitles. i have an
episode of the simpsons and i want to add subtitles to a specific section of
the episode. the original avi file works perfectly and i am trying to add
the subtitles using:

$ mencoder -font `locate arial.ttf` -subfont-text-scale 3
simpsons-proposition-24.avi -sub simpsons-proposition-24.sub -oac mp3lame
-ovc lavc -ffourcc DX50 -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:v4mv:trell:dia=3 -o
simpsons-proposition-24-snippet.avi

the subtitles only last a few seconds and start a couple of minutes into the
episode.

now this works okay and adds the subtitles in the right place BUT as soon as
the subtitles start the image gets badly corrupted, with pulsing black blobs
all over it. this lasts for a few seconds before it clears up gradually and
finally disappears. does anyone have any idea why this happens? and, more
importantly, how to fix it?
