Most of those other configure scripts were probably autotools-based.
MPlayer's configure script has the semantics it does very much
intentionally, and warns about the fact at the end of its --help output.

This package probably just contains the library files. You also need the
header files, which are usually in a separate package.
Also, please do not top-post on these lists (or, if at all possible,
anywhere else either).
