Thanks for the reply. I actually discovered the -vf eq2 switch after
googling a bit. What I find odd is that prior to the system rebuild,
these functions worked without the switch in my commandline. All I
used in the past was:
$ mplayer -fs -full -xv vo <filename>
Is there an equivalent commend for the .mplayer/config that may have been in my old one?

Whether contrast/brightness, etc., can be set depends first on your VO.
