[MPlayer-users] Problems with Mplayer

Below is the output of gnome-mplpayer -v .
The error message is interesting:
ERROR: [VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card
available.
ID_AUDIO_ID=2
ERROR: [VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read

and towards the bottom, it says:
Video: no video

~/.mplayer/config contains:
# Write your default config options here!

[gnome-mplayer]
vo=xv
ao=alsa
vf=eq2

Running
$ xvinfo
X-Video Extension version 2.2
screen #0
 no adaptors present

and yet, mplayer can indeed play the videos via the xv driver,
but gnome-mplayer cannot! Weird!

Is gnome-mplayer supposed to simply exec mplayer and pass it the
arguments? If so, why the failure?
