Thanks, much appreciated.

Problem I have is that with just two jpegs the resulting .avi is so
short that the sound track does not even get a chance to start playing!

:-)

For the record I typed the following at the prompt:

$ mencoder "mf://*.jpg" -mf fps=2 -audiofile test.wav -oac copy -ovc
  raw -o test.avi

Also tried with fps=0 just in case .. but it just hangs.

It does create a very short video that I can play back with mplayer,
pause via the '.' key .. but with a garbled pic.

Anyway, I'm not sure I should bother you gentlemen further.

Probably should ask on a general-purpose linux list.

But this has made me curious as to how things work and I'd be quite
thankful if someone could direct me to some something in plain English
that introduces the concepts of videos, formats, codecs.. etc.

Heck, when the docs I read discuss encoding, passes (?) .. I have just
not clue what they are talking about.
