thanks for the hint!

Now at least for a little while (< 1 min and even that with some
glitches) the audio part is played on the TV. Then mplayer somehow
gets stuck and spills out thousands of messages saying:

:A:  47.3 V:  26.6 A-V: 20.728 ct:  2.626 659/659  0% 104%  0.2% 0 0
:Too many video packets in the buffer: (4096 in 7765496 bytes).
:Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
:For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.

occasionally interrupted by:

:Cannot sync MPA frame: 0

Should I ever get the video output working, I'll look into this closer.
