OK.  I was expecting to hear that I had overlooked some needed option.

I've rebuilt mencoder (only) from the latest subversion snapshot, and
I still see the same result.  I've attached the output from the
mencoder and mplayer runs.

BTW, that mencoder rebuild was totally painless on my CentOS 5
system.  "./configure --disable-mplayer; make; make install"
No glitches whatsoever.  Great job, guys!
