OOOOOPssssssss oh no RTFM indeed. Well thank you for pushing back I have 
my answer. I can only do it as
root but I'm sure I can hunt down the device being used and correct for 
that.
anyway I have a radeon card so I can't vouch for everyone but this 
worked great (so far) for me:

$mplayer -vo xvidix <movie.file>

They say you can name the driver you are using on the command line but 
mplayer probed the hardware
successfully without any prompting. Xawtv worked without problems when I 
was through with the file.

Thanks again. I've been impressed with mplayer for some time and Im glad 
I can now use it without having to reset just to continue with another 
form of brainrot.
