Alright, I found a hint in the MPlayer FAQ:

mplayer -demuxer rawaudio -rawaudio format=0x2000

With that I get it to play just fine. Isn't there a way to make MPlayer try 
that case automatically? But then again if there were, it probably would have 
been done already and it wouldn't be mentioned in the FAQ....

Still I would like to see that anytime in the future :)
