Well, perhaps, this depends on your video output. I use -vo gl. And 
I just tested with small resolution video with subtitles: they are 
scaled nice to the screen resolution using just fontconfig.

I use GL output and see no tearing, my card is nVidia GT7300 with 
proprietary driver. I know, this is bad to use this proprietary 
software, but it is the only way to make GL work on my PC.
