AVI is an old format that lacks proper support for many modern features.
 (VBR audio, soft subs, etc.)  Also, HD is almost always encoded in h264
video format (vs, the old Xvid) and there are many video devices that do
not support that video.  It would cause much confusion for the average
person if their DVD player can play one .avi but not the other.

HD video is therefore most often provided in mkv file container, and
sometimes mp4.
