This could be the reason for the crash in your MPlayer version.
The 'default config file' is most likely /etc/fonts/fonts.conf,
 which in your case seems to be broken.
Of course MPlayer should not crash due to this, that bug might be
fixed in svn.  At least my SVN-r29806 version does not crash if I
intentionally break my fonts.conf.
