Are you rendering them with -ass or -noass?
Are you using the OSD to draw them or the filter (if you don't know, say
which -vo you use).
Generally, you should be able to use
-vf ass,expand=...
or
-vf expand=osd=1,expand=...
instead of
-vf expand=...

for this.
