I know, I know... I was making a counterpoint. But I really don't want
to take this thread off topic with a distro war.

If the user is using a released software version and all its standard
features, then there should be no reason to compile. If a user wants
the latest, greatest, bleeding edge feature right out of SVN, let him
compile.
