My guess: you somehow managed to end up with an ancient version of the
alsa libraries, but newer version of the headers.
If you haven't, try make distclean && ./configure && make
again.
Or configure with --disable-alsa, though you might end up having no
sound at all (check the configure output that some AO that seems
sensible to you is enabled).
