I'm also experiencing something similar (or the same).

Using a 2.6.30-rc5 vanilla kernel here (distro is Gentoo) and a
1.6.2_rc1 xorg-server (plus the usual intel git and mesa git).

Using mplayer on the console through fbdev always fails with:
"Cannot initialize video driver.t"

I dunno what the ".t" does there, but it's not a copy&paste error.
