you might consider abandoning "legacy" subtitle font in favor of 
fontconfig. Remove svn? just remove mplayer binary, but that's
not the best idea. I'd update to recent version using svn, set 
up my favorite (hebrew) font name as subtitle font using config
(font="generic name"), set -sub-cp=windows-1255 and it should be
working like charm.
