(Note that there is a yadif patch for FFmpeg)
(And yes, I know that Realmedia files work very badly with FFmpeg.)

That sounds unlikely to me, but please, do not let me stop you using MEncoder, I
just wanted to repeat that it is currently (and since quite some time) de-facto
unmaintained (as you found out these days).
And it seems you weren't aware of it which makes it a good reason to repeat.

Yes, of course, but he has stated repeatedly that he sees it as unmaintained.

Are you sure you are not mixing up MPlayer and MEncoder? I ask because I don't
remember the last MEncoder-specific commit before today's audio quality option
added.
