Thanks.  I've just managed to compile mplayer; the patch does indeed
increase the transfer rate almost four-fold.  look forward to seeing
the patch get committed.

The only issue I can see is that the console gets filled up with lots
of "Sector size 16384 larger than maximum 8192".  I'm not sure if that
is a problem.
