[MPlayer-users] latest mplayer revision decodes .avi files with terrible screeching sound

Hello, I began to experience a problem playing .avi files with the latest version of
mplayer, MPlayer SVN-r33097-4.6.0.

While vlc plays .avi's just fine, mplayer decodes the audio with a high pitched screeching
noise.  Only avi's have this problem; other filetypes work as expected.  Does anyone else
have this problem?
