 Well, I got "no adaptors present":

 It may relate to the start up options I give to the kernel:

 knoppix init 2 xmodule=vesa alsa fb1280x1024 depth=16 fromhd=/dev/sdb5

 because the sound and video cards of the old machine I use are a bit
flacky. Still I can play youtube videos and some local and DVD based
videos this way with no problems whatsoever

 if I go this way I don't see anything at all, at least the way I was
using it mplayer shows me something
