Mplyaer computes cache size automatically on start.
For example when I play local file cache not used. For one http realtime
music
cache is 180 KBytes with cache-min 20%, and for another 320 KBytes with 0%
prefill.
Cache depends on source. It's impossible to set common cache setting for all
media.
When I play local file my disk speed is not always enought to see it. (Some
other task may use disk, it may be slow flash, cdrom or usb disk, or media
bitrate is very big). So I nedd to close mplayer, add something like -cache
32768, and scroll to position where I stopped.

I think this will be usefull option.
