[MPlayer-users] Subtitles and the on-screen seek bar

GMPlayer and the core MPlayer (without any flags) does not display subtitles
correctly, but SMPlayer does on Ubuntu. I'd like to use the core,
stand-alone MPlayer, can anyone please help me make it render subtitles
properly when available?

The on-screen seek bar that appears when using the arrow keys to jump
forward/backward can be disabled on SMPlayer as well. Again, how do I do the
same MPlayer?
